SCANDINAVIAN BIG MOUNTAIN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Arranged annually since 1992, the Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships is the world´s original big mountain competition. Hosting ski area for the event is the small resort of Riksgränsen, located above the Arctic Circle on the border between Sweden and Norway.

The SBMC is not only a race for glory and prize money. It is also the grande finale of the European freeride season with midnight sun skiing and partying in a relaxed atmosphere.

Final report SBMC 2011

The conditions for the last final run on Thusday May 19:th looked a bit scetchy with rock hard snow at Nordalsbranten. But just in time for the start the snow had softened up and made the venue far better than expected. Best in the final and total winner in the Men´s Alpine class was former Freeride World Champion Henrik Windstedt, Sweden.

The 62 riders gave it all in the great final in the 20:th edition of the Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships in Riksgränsen, Sweden.
Alpine racer Mattias Hargin was in the lead from Wednesdays final run and started out fast and aggressive. But Hargin lost control in the lower section and fell which took his chanses of a podium position away. Henrik Windstedt nailed a fast and technical run with a big drop at the end and that made him number one of that run and in the total. Windstedt has won SBMC six times before during the years.
-It´s been a few years now when I´ve missed the gold so it feels really good to be on top again. The standard was high this year so I felt that I had to give it all to get a chans to win, says Windstedt after his run.

In second position came upcoming freeskier Kristoffer Turdell. Reine Barkered came in third. The women´s alpine class was won by Matilda Rapaport. Björn Lindgren did an impressive run and won the Snowboard class for the sixth time in his carrer. Morgan Sahlen was number one in the telemark class.

SBMC 2010 - THE FINAL STORY

........................................................................................................................................................

SCANDINAVIAN BIG MOUNTAIN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010 ACCOMPLISHED

After two days of competing with some of the world’s best freeriders, Wille Lindberg, of Sweden is the 2010 champion.

Today’s big final started at Nordalsbranten, but due to poor visibility, only the snowboard- and telemark disciplines were completed. After a few hours of waiting for weather improvements, the board of riders and the organizer decided to cancel the competition when the fog increased in the afternoon.

The final results in the men’s and women’s alpine disciplines were decided by the score from the first day of competing.

Among the snowboarders and telemarkers, Finland ruled. Snowboarder Nicklas Hollsten and telemarker Joonas Karhumaa are the 2010 Big Mountain Champions.

In the women´s alpine class former Swedish national alpine team skier Janette Hargin took the gold ahead of Lotten Rapp and Christine Hargin.

In the men’s alpine the judges had a hard time separating the podium finishers. After a fast and powerful run with huge cliff jumps and perfect landings, Wille Lindberg took his second victory in history and became the 2010 champion. Emanuel Hedvall in second place did a similar line. Philip Harlaut in third place was the crowd pleaser of the day with a big 360 over the rocks in Nordalsbranten.
